Beovox 5000 had been designed and manufactured with the innovative and prestigious Beolab 5000 system in mind in the late 1960s. Produced between 1967 and 1969 the speakers - as were the rest of the system’s components - were designed by Jacob Jensen for which he was given the iF Design Award for the Beomaster 5000, Beolab 5000 and Beovox 2500 Cube loudspeakers for outstanding and user-friendly design at the 1967 Hanover spring fair.
Developed originally from the Type K loudspeaker its specifications were consequently changed in order to adapt it better to the Beolab 5000 amplifier which at that time was Bang & Olufsen’s most powerful product. There were actually three designs of the Beovox 5000 during its lifetime with the company and connections remained for the Beovox 2500 Cube - for enhancing the upper frequencies - throughout its life.
In its first incarnation Beovox 5000 was equipped with a 300mm bass driver, two rounded mid-range drivers and a column of four 50mm tweeters.
Two potentiometers were included at the rear of the speaker which allowed for manipulation of the frequency response for mid-range and treble. These were truly professional speakers and for purists of sound.
The Beovox 5000 were sturdy and extremely heavy units. Standing at 74cm they would have required a large-sized room from which to be able to extract their full potential. They stood on their own short legs as they would have been too big and heavy to have been placed anywhere else.
The speaker was available in a range of three natural wood veneers (oak to special order). As a sign that these were exclusive (and expensive loudspeakers) Beovox 5000 even had a gold-plated company logo!
The range of Beovox 5000 speakers was subsequently replaced by Beovox 5700.
Produced between 1970 and 1971 the Beovox 5000 MK II had its tweeters and mid-range drivers substituted with a single oval-shaped mid-range unit, 12. 7 x 18,4 cm in size. Two further tweeters were positioned at around 60 degrees to each other. A single rear-mounted potentiometer remained on this version, in order to manipulate the mid-range frequencies. The alterations were carried out to increase further the dispersion of the tweeters’ higher frequencies.
Produced between 1972 and 1974, more emphasis was placed on the speaker’s higher frequencies when Beovox 5000 MKIII had its treble drivers exchanged for two 50mm and one 25mm ones. Both the bass and mid-range drivers remained the same as in the MKII version.
However, with the additional emphasis on upper frequencies the treble-frequency potentiometer was included at the rear of the cabinet once more, together with the mid-range adjuster.
