Many portable Bang & Olufsen products - such as the Beolit range of the early 1970s - were equipped with their own internal battery power only. Running off batteries was fine if a user purchased the radio with a view to transporting it aroung the house or garden but caused problems if it was bought for use in a more permanent position.
Beopower 600 and 1000 were two products which got over this problem in that they delivered mains power at the necessary stepped-down voltage. Beolit 600 and Beolit 400 - which required voltage of 7.5 volts - were two such portable radios which benefitted from the practicality that both these two units offered. Not only did the two Beopower models make the whole prospect of listening to a radio easier (saving on batteries), they also allowed a radio to be positioned in a more static position - providing that it was close to a mains socket. The power supply also incorporated an electronic protection circuit which automatically switched off the output voltage in case of short circuits and overloads.
