BeoVision MX4200

BeoVision

Production: 2003 - 2007

Introduced in 2003 and withdrawn from the market in early 2007, the BeoVision MX4200 and BeoVision MX8000 were the last of their kind. Bang & Olufsen had proved to the world that the MX range had been a fine set of products, reliable and good-looking, and one which had stood the test of time.  Eighteen years in the world of fast-moving technology is a long time indeed when nothing seems to stand still for very long.  But with the rapid move to flat-screened LCD and plasma televisions firmly underway, Bang and Olufsen decided to remove the last of their CRT models from the market entirely, as did the vast majority of TV manufacturers. However, the MX range of televisions was still just as modern-looking as at the sets’ introduction, and with the range’s wide and varied colour and support choices, MX televisions had always kept at a pace with fashion and trends.

Looking remarkably the same as the model range had ever done before despite an entirely new picture tube, chassis and electronics, the MX4200 begged the observer to notice anything different about the newer model despite its change of number from that of BeoVision MX4000. Yet it was this new television which had replaced both the BeoVision MX4000 and MX4002. Things inside however had changed significantly, and right down to a slightly differently-shaped rear end (which would have taken even the most observant to have noticed).

New changes between the MX4200 and MX4002/4000 were: an overall better menu system as well as PIN-coded theft protection, the option of a STB Controller, 16:9 format handling and an improved picture. A MasterLinkconnection as well as an RF Modulator were optional extras.

With the market changing rapidly towards that of flat screened televisions, BeoVision 6 took over from where the BeoVision MX4200 had left off, although with quite a large price difference one can hardly say that it was a direct one-on-one replacement.

The original design of the MX range over such a long period of time - and its subsequent success - had indeed borne testimony to the design skills of David Lewis.
