Jacob Jensen’s 1967 Beolab 5000 System paved the way for three more ’stacking’ separates’ units over the following decade or so, and Beocord 5000 was the cassette-playing section of this first, excellent system. Each of the four aluminum-clad elements of the Beosystem 5000 were designed to complement (i.e. resemble) as far as possible their family members. Even with the remote controls (for this first system there were, in fact, three remotes which one could purchase as extras) the emphasis was on design. And because the way that the system had been designed (the record deck had to be placed on top, for obvious reasons), the opening of the tape deck had to be undertaken by a motorized ‘drawer’ in which to place your cassette tape. Likewise, the other more ‘tactile’ buttons were situated within this drawer too… however, most of the primary functions were designed to be carried out by remote control.
As well as Dolby B/C and Bang & Olufsen’s own patented HX-Pro, the cassette deck had many more tricks up its sleeve including comprehensive search facilities, a timer, and a real-time counter. Datalink was fitted, and the user could use around-the-house music control through the early MCL system. There were connections for a microphone and an AUX socket.
Altogether a beautiful machine and the first in the ’stacking’ series of separates. Much sought-after today.
The machine was subsequently replaced by the Beocord 5500.
