Beomaster 3400 boasted that it was one of the limited few quadraphonic receivers that were constructed by Bang & Olufsen during the mid-1970s. Producing either 2 x 30W or 4 x 20W, Beomaster 3400 was on sale at the same time as the excellent Beomaster 6000: Bang & Olufsen’s quadraphonic oeuvre d’art although was not quite as sophisticated, and nor did it produce quite as much power. However, in terms of day to day use, the Beomaster 3400 was just as pleasurable to handle and looked the part even though it lacked remote control.
Typical of a Jacob Jensen design for its time, with large ’slide rule’ controls, the receiver was based upon the Beomaster 2000 and so its pedigree was top-notch. The listening experience was excellent for its days and one could listen through a pair of quadraphonic headphones - although Bang & Olufsen did not produce any.
The receiver was FM-only which perhaps limited its appeal a little. And with quadraphony sliding out as quickly as it slid in - reappearing in a different guise with the Beosystem AV9000 some fifteen years later - Beomaster 3400 (and Beomaster 6000) were quietly withdrawn from the Bang & Olufsen product line-up.
The receiver could ideally be used with Beogram 3400 which was able to handle the necessary 4-channel quadraphonic line input. Beocord 2200 cassette deck was ideal to function with the two units, together with a pair (or four) Beovox S45 or P45 loudspeakers.
