Beocord 8002 was the second generation of the excellent 8000-series of compact cassette tape decks. Replacing the innovative Beocord 8000, Bang & Olufsen introduced a cassette-recording technology that would be widely accepted by other manufacturers around the world, that of Dolby HX-Pro.
In 1982 the Dolby company developed a system called Dolby HX. It was not a noise reduction system as such, more of a method of providing a cleaner original recording. HX or ‘Headroom eXtension’ is a method for further increasing the dynamic range of a cassette tape by dynamically adjusting the ultrasonic bias signal, used by all analog tape decks, to increase the headroom for high-frequency audio signals. In the early 1980s, Bang & Olufsen further modified it for consumer equipment and marketed by Dolby as Dolby HX Pro. Note that HX and HX Pro are used only in recording, and not for playback. The improvement in performance was certainly worthwhile, and benefits with all types of tapes and recordings were made using this new process. In particular, it enabled really good recordings to be made by using basic ferric tape - standard for most domestic machines and car audio systems of the day, few of which offered the correct equalization for Chrom Dioxid tapes.
Standard to the Beocord 8002 was Dolby B HX-Pro noise reduction and Datalink. The metal tape could also be used.
