The BeoVision 7-40 MKIII LCD TV was upgraded in October 2009 with the addition of an optional DVB-HD tuner module, the ability to receive HD broadcasts, the incorporation of 100Hz technology with motion compensation and the further option of a built-in Blu-ray Disc player. The original 7-40 LCD TV was designed with an onboard DVD player as standard, but from October 2009 buyers could choose to have a Blu-ray drive in its place. With the player being BD-Live compatible, it was able to receive extra content via the Internet.
The Blu-ray player could support the following formats: Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital + 7.1, Dolby Digital True HD 7.1, DTS 5.1, LPCM 7.1. Blu-ray discs with DTS HD 7.1 or DTS HD Master 7.1 were decoded as DTS 5.1. Bang & Olufsen also added 100Hz operation to its in-house video engine and DVB-HD capability was provided by a second optional module, mounted on the video engine, which supported reception of terrestrial signals as well as signals from selected cable programme providers.
As with BeoVision 7-40’s previous incarnations the TV was available with a choice of speaker modules: the BeoLab 7-2 providing stereo sound from broadcasts and the BeoLab 7-4 functioning as the centre speaker in a mutlichannel set-up. Available in a choice of colours – black, silver, dark grey, red, blue and gold – the television came with a range of dedicated stand options.
BeoVision 7-40 MKIII replaced the MKII version in 2007. There is also a separate BeoVision 7-40 TV available without a built-in optical reader.
Note that unlike the built-in DVD player of previous BeoVision 7 versions, the Blu-ray drive no longer supports MKV, Divx, Xvid etc. This is unfortunate as, despite giving an inferior picture, all of these compressed video file formats are particularly small and trasportable, especially when compared to Blu-ray recordings.
