Beovision MX5000

BeoVision

Production: 1988 - 1990

Designer: David Lewis

Beovision MX5000 was a 28″ colour television which replaced the poorly-regraded Beovision MX4500. It was fitted with an A2 / NICAM stereo decoder and offered 2 x 15 watts through its log-line speaker system.

Using the Beolink 1000 remote control terminal which fully controlled its functions, the handset could also direct the television’s motorised base and stand, two units which had been specially manufactured for this particulat television (MB5000 table-top motorised base and MS5000 motorised floor stand). The television, mounted on either of these two stands could be made to turn 35 degrees in either direction for more suitable viewing. When the television was turned off, it automatically reset itself to its centre position. The Beovision MX5000 was the first Bang & Olufsen TV set to use such a motorised base/stand.

Beovision MX5000 could use the  Beocord VX5000 video recorder which could display a small image from the VCR in an on-screen window using new digital technology.  The idea was further enhanced with Bang & Olufsen’s Picture-in-Picture module a few years later.

The Beosat RX satellite decoder had been specially developed for use with this television, which fitted underneath the set itself.

The television was given the iF Design Award for its design and functionality in 1990.

There was also a variant of this TV: the Beovision MX5000 US NTSC but which was withdrawn from the market after but a short period on the market. This was Bang & Olufsen’s first television entry within the North American market.
