BeoSystem AV9000

The whole idea of surround sound of the 1970s, complete with ambiophonic sound and CD4-encoded discs came to an abrupt end after the public’s interest waned. Systems were generally too pricey, there was never enough choice of media to play and the equipment used was too big and bulky, occupying too much space in the living room.  However, by the early 1990s, Bang & Olufsen tried to change all of that with the introduction of its Beosystem AV9000.  Dolby Pro-Logic had been offered as an option in other manufacturers’ product lists for several years when, specifically videotapes, were given enhanced sound by the addition of pseudo-stereophonic effects for two rear speakers in order to enhance the viewing experience, especially for VHS videotapes, the main medium of entertainment.  A simple system, and one which was nowhere near that of the levels of sophistication of the newer Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 sound systems, Dolby Pro-Logic was a reasonably-exciting experience in that it fulfilled what it promised and paved the way for something more exciting a few more years down the line.
