The reasonably-priced Beocenter 1400 offered a moderate 2×20W RMS amplifier together with an FM/MW/LW radio and a built-in cassette unit. As was the fashion in the mid-1970s, families often had a music system which could handle everything that was thrown at it and this unit looked the part in its sleek, wooden-veneered case together with slider controls and chunky buttons.
The unit was the first Bang & Olufsen music centre to house a cassette compartment. Compact cassettes by then were becoming more and more popular, and in keeping up with individuals’ tastes, B&O started from this point on in gracing selected music systems with cassette players, either built-in or as separate units. Beocenter 1400 was based around the Beomaster 901 receiver and likewise offered full DIN 45500 standard sound. Beomaster 901 also formed the basis of the tape deck.
On the radio side of things, AFC allowed for precise tuning, and, as with most of Bang & Olufsen tuners, distant radio stations could be received with few problems. Playing cassettes posed no problems either with both normal and Chrom Dioxide tapes being accepted. Two large recording level meters displayed sound levels both during recording and of subsequent recording sessions. There were sockets on the unit for headphones, record deck and two loudspeakers.
When combined with Beovox 1702 loudspeakers and/or Beogram 1202/1203, the system was known as Beosystem 1400.
Beocenter 1400 was replaced by Beocenter 1500 and 1600.
