Beocenter 4000 was one of a trio: its siblings Beocenter 2200 and Beocenter 2100 were similar in looks externally, but with the exception that they were kitted out differently internally. Bang & Olufsen’s philosophy at this time - especially when it came to the Japanese who were able to mass-produce their relatively good quality products at knock-down prices - was to offer something for everyone. Beocenter 4000 therefore looked the same on the outside with the lid down, but within it was fitted with two cassette decks: one for playback and the other for recording and for playing back. A first for Beocenter 4000’s cassette decks was that it had auto-reverse incorporated, which meant that at the time of one cassette side finishing, the player played the same tape but in reverse, allowing the other side of the tape to be heard. Moreover, HX-Pro and Dolby B NR circuitry was fitted too, making Beocenter 4000 an excellent cassette tape all-rounder.

Both of the cassette units could use the whole range of tape types that were available at that time: ferrix oxide, Chrom Dioxide and Metal. And the microphone-in socket allowed for the mixing of spoken voice and music, if that was your forté.

The amplifier had a medium-powered 2 x 25W but with the provided Beovox X25 speakers lacked the quality that Bang & Olufsen is known for.  However, at the same time the music centre was both affordable and looked good, and was an excellent first venture into the world of Bang & Olufsen for a first-time purchaser who did not expect too much.

Stand SM40 was available for displaying the Beocenter 4000 as well as the Beocenter 2100 and 2200.
